The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It launched in Japan on November 21, 1998, then arrived in North America on November 23 and in Europe on December 11. The game moved Zelda from the series' earlier two dimensional perspective into a fully three dimensional world, while retaining exploration, dungeons, items, and puzzle solving. Shigeru Miyamoto produced the project, Eiji Aonuma directed dungeon design, and Koji Kondo composed its music. Development originally targeted the Nintendo 64DD, but Nintendo released the finished game on a larger cartridge instead.
Players control Link, who begins as a child in Kokiri Forest and is drawn into a conflict involving the Gerudo thief Ganondorf. The Great Deku Tree sends Link to obtain three Spiritual Stones, but the adventure expands after Link opens the Sacred Realm and pulls the Master Sword from its pedestal. Seven years pass, transforming him into an adult and placing Hyrule under Ganondorf's control. Princess Zelda, disguised as the Sheikah warrior Sheik, guides Link toward awakening the seven sages. Link eventually explores the Forest Temple, Fire Temple, Water Temple, Shadow Temple, Spirit Temple, and Ganon's Castle in his effort.
A central innovation is the Z-targeting system, which lets Link lock onto enemies, characters, and interactive objects while automatically adjusting his movement and attacks. This mechanic made sword fighting and three dimensional platforming more readable, especially against bosses such as Queen Gohma, King Dodongo, Volvagia, Morpha, and Twinrova. Link's horse, Epona, can be obtained at Lon Lon Ranch after a race against Ingo, and the Hookshot, Bow, and Iron Boots provide abilities required for specific areas. The ocarina itself activates songs including Zelda's Lullaby, Epona's Song, the Sun's Song, and the Song of Time. Each changes Hyrule specifically during play.
Ocarina of Time received widespread critical acclaim and is frequently cited among the most influential console games ever made. It won several major awards, including Game of the Year honors, and its design established conventions later used by three dimensional action adventure games. Nintendo later released an expanded version, Ocarina of Time Master Quest, with rearranged dungeon puzzles, first for the GameCube. The original also appeared on the GameCube as a bonus disc and on the Wii and Wii U Virtual Console services. The 3DS remake, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, launched in 2011 with stereoscopic 3D.
