Pokémon Go is a location-based augmented-reality mobile game developed by Niantic and published with The Pokémon Company and Nintendo. It launched for iOS and Android in July 2016, first appearing in Australia and New Zealand before expanding to the United States, Europe, and other regions. The game uses a phone’s GPS, camera, map data, and internet connection to place Pokémon encounters in real-world locations. Players create an avatar and explore their surroundings to find Pokémon. When a wild Pokémon appears, the player can throw a Poké Ball by swiping on the touchscreen. The camera can display the Pokémon against the player’s actual surroundings through augmented reality, although the feature can also be disabled. Different species are associated with particular environments; for example, Water-type Pokémon have historically appeared more often near bodies of water. Weather and special events can also influence which Pokémon spawn. PokéStops and Gyms are placed at real-world landmarks and points of interest. PokéStops provide items such as Poké Balls, berries, and eggs, while Gyms are locations where players can battle and defend Pokémon. In the original structure, players joined Team Instinct, Team Mystic, or Team Valor after reaching level five. The three teams competed for control of Gyms, although later game systems expanded beyond this central rivalry. Pokémon Go is not built around a fixed narrative campaign. Its continuing story is delivered through research tasks, seasonal events, character encounters, and Team GO Rocket conflicts. Professor Willow assigns research and introduces discoveries, while Team GO Rocket members use Shadow Pokémon. Special research has involved characters such as Giovanni, Jessie, and James, and recurring events have introduced new species, costumes, and temporary mechanics. The game’s launch became a worldwide cultural event. It encouraged outdoor exploration and famously caused crowds to gather at locations containing rare Pokémon or valuable PokéStops. In its first week, it broke download and usage records for a mobile game, although its rapid popularity also produced server outages and safety concerns. Niantic later added features including raids, player-versus-player Trainer Battles, trading, friendship levels, remote interaction options, and Community Days. Pokémon Go has continued receiving Pokémon from successive generations rather than releasing the entire series at once. Its design combines collection, travel, map-based discovery, exercise, and social play, making real geography part of the game’s progression. Updates, balance changes, sponsored locations, and live events have continually reshaped how players encounter and collect Pokémon.
