Mario Kart World is a racing game developed by Nintendo and released for Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. It is the first new mainline Mario Kart entry since Mario Kart 8, which launched on Wii U in 2014. Nintendo presents its courses as connected regions, allowing drivers to travel directly between races rather than selecting individual tracks. The game’s Free Roam mode lets players explore this world without following a conventional race, discovering routes and activities freely. A major competitive format is Knockout Tour, where racers pass checkpoints and the last competitors are eliminated at intervals throughout. Its starting roster includes Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Bowser, Yoshi, Toad, and Donkey Kong, alongside additional returning series veterans too. Nintendo also adds playable opponents called Conkdors, Cataquacks, and other enemy characters, expanding the usual hero-centered selection in this game. Courses draw on familiar locations including Bowser’s Castle, Peach Stadium, Moo Moo Meadows, and a circuit known as Rainbow Road. Mario Kart World introduces new movement options, including charging a jump, wall-riding, and using rails to cross gaps during races. Drivers can also perform Rewinds in some modes, returning a vehicle to an earlier position while other racers continue moving. Items remain central, with familiar weapons such as shells and bananas joined by new tools that affect movement and positioning. The playable world supports larger fields of racers than earlier entries, making traffic, shortcuts, and collisions more consequential in races. Nintendo built the game specifically for Switch 2, whose hardware enables higher-resolution presentation and faster loading than the original Switch. Its announcement was part of Switch 2 reveal, linking Mario Kart World to Nintendo’s launch lineup for its new console. The game retains Grand Prix, Time Trials, and versus racing while its connected map changes how players reach and revisit. This structure makes exploration part of the game’s identity, while Knockout Tour provides a high-pressure race across several connected checkpoints. Online play supports races with players, and the open environment gives each session more room for detours, encounters, and experimentation. Mario Kart World therefore expands the series without abandoning its recognizable ingredients: colorful characters, item battles, drifting, and last-second finishes. Its importance lies not in replacing Mario Kart’s arcade foundation, but in placing that foundation inside a continuous world to explore. That combination distinguishes the 2025 release: it is simultaneously a console showcase, a traditional racer, and an exploration-focused Mario Kart.
