ISLANDERS is a minimalist city-building strategy game developed by GrizzlyGames and released for Windows, macOS, and Linux on April 4, 2019. Rather than presenting a named protagonist or a scripted campaign, it frames play around settling a succession of small, procedurally generated islands. The player receives limited building packs and places their contents one structure at a time, trying to earn enough points to obtain another pack and eventually move on to a new island. That loop is the game’s central run-based progression: a run continues only while the available buildings and scoring opportunities can sustain it. No conventional narrative campaign is involved. Placement is not merely decorative. Each building has its own scoring rules, displayed before it is placed. A lumberjack, for example, benefits from nearby trees, while a city centre is intended to sit near other buildings; a shaman gains value from being placed near city centres, and a temple is rewarded for distance from other structures. Other pieces, including farms, mansions, brickworks, and seaweed farms, likewise depend on particular neighbours or terrain. Because packs arrive with limited choices, the player cannot freely design an unlimited settlement. A poor location can waste a rare building’s potential, whereas a carefully arranged cluster can generate the points required for the next selection. The islands themselves are a major constraint. Their irregular coastlines, forests, beaches, and inland spaces determine which combinations are practical, and building footprints can make a seemingly open area unusable for a later piece. When an island is finished, the game records a score and sends the player onward rather than asking them to manage trade, warfare, citizens, or production chains. This absence of simulation systems is deliberate: ISLANDERS reduces city building to spatial puzzles and score optimization. It uses a clean, low-poly visual style, with colourful structures set against water and compact terrain, and its interface keeps the focus on the current building pack and point total. GrizzlyGames later supported the game with a Sandbox mode, which allows unrestricted building without the pressure of ending a run after resources are exhausted. That option does not replace the original high-score structure; it offers a separate way to use the islands and building set. ISLANDERS therefore stands apart from conventional city builders not through a fictional saga, but through its defined placement rules, finite packs, procedural maps, and the repeated decision of whether an island still has enough scoring potential to continue.
