Grand Theft Auto V was developed by Rockstar North and published by Rockstar Games. It launched in September 2013 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, then reached PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2014, Windows in 2015, and PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in 2022. Set in the fictional state of San Andreas, its principal city of Los Santos and Blaine County reinterpret Southern California. The game uses an open world that players can explore by car, aircraft, boat, or on foot. Its story rotates among three playable criminals: retired bank robber Michael De Santa, street hustler Franklin Clinton, and volatile career criminal Trevor Philips. The narrative begins with a failed 2004 robbery in Ludendorff, North Yankton, where Michael and Trevor escape while their accomplice Brad Snider is apparently killed. In 2013, Michael lives under an informal arrangement with Federal Investigation Bureau agent Dave Norton, while Franklin works for luxury automobile dealer Simeon Yetarian. Franklin meets Michael during a repossession, and the pair later join forces after Michael's family problems and a conflict with drug dealer Martin Madrazo. Trevor learns Michael survived after seeing televised footage from a jewel store heist. The three protagonists subsequently conduct major robberies, including the Paleto Bay bank job, an assault on the Merryweather security firm, and the Union Depository heist. Their opposing pressures include corrupt FIB official Steve Haines, billionaire Devin Weston, and the dangerous Chinese Triads. Missions frequently allow planning choices, particularly selecting crew members and choosing approaches for heists. The final mission, “The Third Way,” becomes available if the player rejects Franklin’s two assassination options against Michael or Trevor. In that ending, the trio survives and eliminates several enemies. The alternative conclusions, “Kill Michael” and “Something Sensible,” require Franklin to kill Michael or Trevor respectively. Players may also switch among the three protagonists outside many missions, observing daily activities and receiving character specific calls and encounters. Grand Theft Auto Online launched on October 1, 2013, shortly after the single player release. It shares Los Santos and supports cooperative and competitive activities, including heists added in the 2015 Heists update. Rockstar has continued to release expansions, such as The Contract, which features Franklin Clinton and Dr. Dre, and The Chop Shop.
