Dragon’s Dogma 2 is Capcom’s 2024 open-world action role-playing game, directed by Hideaki Itsuno and built with the RE Engine. It launched on March 22, 2024, for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X and Series S. Like its predecessor, it centers on the Arisen, a person whose heart the Dragon takes, creating a supernatural link between them.
The sequel begins with the Arisen enslaved at a dig site, while a false Sovran rules Vermund and the real monarch is politically erased. A dragon attack restores the protagonist’s identity, and the player is drawn into a conflict involving Queen Regent Disa, Captain Brant, and her son Sven. Vermund’s human court is only one half of the setting; across the border, Battahl is a harsh beastren nation that distrusts Pawns.
Pawns are recruitable companions from the Rift, and the game’s distinctive system lets them learn from other players’ worlds and return with knowledge. They can warn about quests, identify weaknesses, gather items, and comment on landmarks, producing the famously talkative travel parties that accompany exploration. Combat remains deliberately physical: characters climb large monsters, exploit exposed weak points, and combine elemental spells or weapon skills rather than simply trading menu commands.
The vocation system includes familiar roles such as Fighter, Mage, Thief, and Archer, alongside advanced choices including Mystic Spearhand, Trickster, Warfarer, and Magick Archer. Warfarer can equip skills from multiple vocations, while Trickster focuses on illusions and battlefield manipulation instead of conventional damage. Exploration uses roads, caves, ruins, and oxcarts, but travel is intentionally vulnerable: night brings tougher monsters, and an ambush can interrupt an oxcart journey. The world also contains a day-night cycle and camping equipment, allowing the party to recover outside settlements while consuming resources and risking attacks.
Its story revisits the original game’s ideas about fate, sovereignty, and the cycle between Arisen and Dragon, but gives the player a larger political geography. The late game radically changes that geography: after a major revelation, the Unmoored World floods regions, removes the usual time pressure, and introduces stronger enemies. Progress there depends on evacuating settlements, including Vermund, Battahl, and the Elven settlement of Sacred Arbor, before confronting the game’s final threat.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 was also notable for its launch controversy: Capcom added a $2.99 option to change appearance, despite an in-game item, and players criticized performance and monetization. Capcom later issued an apology and promised performance improvements through later game updates.
