Mario Kart Tour is Nintendo’s mobile entry in the Mario Kart series, developed with DeNA and released for iOS and Android on September 25, 2019. Instead of presenting a single permanent Grand Prix campaign, it organizes much of its content into rotating two-week Tours. Each Tour combines races, challenges, drivers, karts, gliders, and themed rewards, often connecting the game to a location, holiday, or character. The launch included the New York Tour, which introduced a course inspired by New York City and established the game’s mixture of fictional Mario settings and real-world destinations.
Its racing roster draws from familiar Mario Kart characters, including Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser, Yoshi, and Toad, while also offering many costumes created specifically for the mobile game. A driver’s special item can shape a race: Mario’s standard Fire Flower throws fireballs, Peach’s Heart can protect her, and characters with the Mushroom Cannon produce mushrooms for competitors to collect. The game’s distinctive Frenzy system activates when a driver obtains three matching items. For a short period, the racer can use that item repeatedly, creating a fast sequence of attacks, boosts, or defensive actions.
Courses include adaptations of earlier Mario Kart tracks and Tour originals. Examples include Tokyo Blur, Paris Promenade, London Loop, Los Angeles Laps, and Vancouver Velocity. These city courses contain recognizable visual references while still using Mario Kart hazards, ramps, item boxes, and shortcuts. The game also introduced variants such as R, T, and R/T layouts, which reverse tracks, add ramps, or emphasize gliding and trick jumps. Driver, kart, and glider combinations affect points and item availability rather than merely changing appearance, making loadout selection important in score-focused events.
At release, Mario Kart Tour used a free-to-start model with optional purchases and a Gold Pass subscription. Its original Pipe system randomly awarded some high-rarity content, a structure Nintendo later replaced with a Spotlight Shop in October 2022. Multiplayer launched in March 2020, allowing players to race others online and compete in standard or Gold Races depending on the available rules. Ranked Cups challenge players to earn high scores against other racers, while badges and tour challenges provide additional objectives.
Mario Kart Tour is therefore less a traditional console-style campaign than a continuously updated collection built around short competitive sessions, themed tours, and score optimization. Its real-world city courses, costume variations, mobile controls, and changing reward systems distinguish it from the series’ fixed-console releases while preserving recognizable items, characters, and track design.
