Dave the Diver

Mintrocket’s Dave the Diver is a single-player adventure game that combines underwater exploration, restaurant management, and story-driven comedy. It was developed by South Korean studio Mintrocket and released in early access for PC in October 2022. The full version launched on Steam in June 2023, followed by Nintendo Switch in October 2023 and PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 in April 2024.

The player controls Dave, a portly diver recruited to help run the Blue Hole, an ocean region whose underwater geography changes daily. Dave dives during the day to catch fish, gather materials, and investigate the area, then works at a sushi restaurant called Bancho Sushi during the evening. His earnings pay for equipment improvements, restaurant upgrades, and staff. The game therefore links exploration directly to business growth: better diving gear allows Dave to reach deeper areas and capture more valuable ingredients, while restaurant profits finance further expeditions.

The Blue Hole is not simply a fishing ground. Dave encounters ancient ruins, hostile creatures, unusual environmental phenomena, and a mysterious underwater civilization known as the Sea People. The main narrative involves archaeological investigation, conflict, and efforts to protect the Sea People from outside threats. Dave works with characters including Bancho, the restaurant’s highly skilled chef; Cobra, an arms dealer and equipment specialist; and Dr. Bacon, an archaeologist. Their exaggerated personalities and frequent comedic arguments shape the game’s distinctive tone.

Gameplay shifts between several activities. Harpoon guns, rifles, tranquilizer weapons, and other equipment help Dave catch or defeat aquatic animals. His limited oxygen supply creates pressure during dives, and carrying capacity forces decisions about which items to bring back. Caught fish become sushi ingredients, while certain missions require specific creatures or materials. At the restaurant, players assign employees, develop recipes, and serve customers efficiently. Optional minigames and side stories add variety, including farming, fish farming, cooking challenges, and character-focused requests.

Dave the Diver also became notable for its visual style. It uses pixel-art characters and environments while presenting some scenes with smooth, cinematic animation and modern effects. Its soundtrack and humorous dialogue reinforce the contrast between relaxed restaurant routines and dangerous underwater exploration. The game’s crossovers have included content from Godzilla, Dredge, and other properties, although some collaboration content has been distributed as limited-time or platform-specific updates. By combining management systems with exploration and a structured narrative, Dave the Diver established an identity beyond a conventional fishing or restaurant simulation.
